Apart from the RAM capacity, Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro have almost similar hardware. Recently, the massive search engine has disclosed some bad news regarding the Pixel 8. The company’s smallest AI model, Gemini Nano, which was unveiled in December of last year, will not be available for the ordinary variant. For Pixel 8 owners who were hoping to get the mobile-friendly LLM on their smartphone, this is a disappointment.
Google confirms Gemini Nano won’t be there on Pixel 8
On the Android Developers channel, Google confirmed in a recent episode of The Android Show that Gemini Nano is not available on the Pixel 8. According to relations engineer of Google developer Terence Zhang, this is due to the smartphone’s hardware constraints. The sole distinction between the Pixel 8 regular and pro versions is that the former has 8GB of RAM while the latter has 12GB, he does not specify what those limits are.
The Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24 series are compatible with Gemini Nano. Features like Gboard’s Smart Reply, WhatsApp’s Summarize, and the Recorder app’s improvements in photography without a network connection are all provided by the AI model. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro differ further from one another because the ordinary form does not have an AI model. You should consider this if you’re thinking of purchasing the Pixel 8 smartphone.
Additionally, Google disclosed that they are aiming to expand the Gemini Nano’s compatibility to include more gadgets. The collaboration between MediaTek and Google to enhance Gemini Nano so that it can be supported in Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chipset was recently disclosed by the chipmaker. The search engine behemoth also disclosed its intentions to incorporate Gemini into Android smartphones beginning in 2025.
