Using Split Screen in Microsoft Edge: How to Enable It

The browser market has remained essentially unchanged for a long time, and Chrome has mostly controlled the UI/UX market. The Arc browser, however, introduced new ways to interact with tabs, bookmarks, and the overall UI in 2022. On the other hand, Vivaldi has long supported tab-tiling to divide the screen into different layouts. The user interface of the Edge browser is now being entirely reimagined by Microsoft as part of a project called “Phoenix,” which is being worked on internally. The updated Microsoft Edge is anticipated to debut alongside Windows 12. However, the new Edge has already begun to appear in chunks on the Canary channel. So, to enable and test the split-screen functionality in Microsoft Edge,

Turn on Split Screen in Microsoft Edge (2023)

1. At the moment, only Microsoft Edge’s Canary channel offers the split screen function. Download the Edge Canary build from this link now.

2. Once installed, open Edge Canary and paste the below path into the address bar. Then, hit Enter.

edge://flags/#edge-split-screen

3. Doing so will take you right to the relevant Edge flag. Turn on “Microsoft Edge Split screen” by clicking the drop-down option next to the flag in this location.

4. At this point, click the “Restart” button in the bottom-right corner. This will apply the adjustments, enabling the split screen capability, and reopen the Edge browser.

How to Use Split Screen in Microsoft Edge

It’s time to test out Edge’s split screen functionality after you’ve enabled it. The several methods listed below can let you use Microsoft Edge to open webpages in split screen mode:

  • Open a webpage and right-click on a link to display two screens side by side in one tab. Select “Open link in split window” after that.
  • By doing this, the split screen window on the right side of the screen will open and the screen will split quickly under the same tab. You may now work side by side without switching between tabs.
  • To quickly split the screen, click the “Split window” option in the toolbar menu (next to the address bar) if you have previously opened websites or links in different tabs.
  • After that, you can select the tab you want to open from the right side, and it will do it immediately.
  • The ability to choose the split screen size is the nicest feature. To change the window size, merely move the slider to the left or right.
  • You can transfer the active split screen to a different tab if you no longer want to use the split screen tabs feature. Simply select “Open screen in a new tab” by clicking the 3-dot button. Click “View split screen pages in two tabs” to open pages in separate tabs.
  • You can also modify how links open in split-screen mode by clicking the split window button. Here, you have the option of opening links in the currently active tab or opening them from tab to tab.

To stop Edge from using split screen mode, click the “Split window” button on the toolbar.
